There is a growing awareness in Montgomery County that mentoring is one of the most effective interventions for children who have suffered the trauma of neglect, abuse, and extreme poverty.

In April, the Youth Links mentoring program addressed the Montgomery County Commission on Children and Youth about mentoring’s role in the county’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative. Later that month, the Commission awarded a Youth Links partner, Deloitte, the Dr. Nancy Dworkin Award for Outstanding Service to Youth/Business category.

In June, the Y reaped the results of running a high-quality community-based mentoring program! Not only is there increased awareness about mentoring in our county, but Youth Links is seen as a model for best practices and effectiveness.  Both the Montgomery County Council and the County Executive included Youth Links in their grant recommendations, awarding funds to our Inspiring Futures initiative which focuses on matches for boys of color and includes programming around identity development and future planning.
