Because drowning is one of the top causes of unintentional death for youth under 14, it is crucial that children learn to swim. Many children have limited access to community pools and swim lessons and miss the chance to gain skills and confidence in the water.

This past year, Youth & Family Services partnered with YMCA Silver Spring to provide swimming lessons to middle school youth.  Being able to bring this vital skill to our youth participants truly embodies youth development, healthy living, AND social responsibility!

A parent of one of the swimmers reported to a YFS counselor that her daughter was “completely terrified” of the water prior to this opportunity, and now she is willing to put her head under water and is quickly gaining confidence in her swimming ability.  It’s not an overstatement to say that the YMCA has changed this young person’s summer experience which will impact the rest of her life.
